Data sources and credits

Everything on this site is assembled from the public sources below, each used under its own terms.

sportsdataverse

Schedules, scores, box scores, play-by-play, shot locations, rosters, player biographies, standings and drafts come from the release files published by the sportsdataverse project (the successor of hoopR's data repository). The project captures the public pages of three upstream publishers, whose work the data remains:

  • NBA Stats: the NBA since 1996-97, including the advanced season measures shown as published.
  • ESPN: the NBA since 2001-02 and Division I men's college basketball since 2002-03.
  • stats.ncaa.org: official NCAA box scores and play-by-play since 2009-10.

Where two sources describe the same game, the official one is kept (NBA Stats for the NBA, the NCAA for college) and the other fills what it lacks.

Wikipedia

The drafts from 1947 to 1996 (the BAA's first three and every NBA draft before NBA Stats' files begin) come from the draft articles of Wikipedia, used under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence: pick, player, team and college as the articles give them, with each team placed under its present-day franchise. So do the league seasons, rosters and averages before 1996-97, the awards, All-Star and All-America selections, the Hall of Fame and the NCAA tournaments before 2002-03. The stories in the β€œFrom the vault” line come from Wikipedia's categories of NBA games, NBA playoff games and plays, NBA controversies, NCAA tournament and championship games and college basketball controversies; each one-sentence summary is Wikipedia's text, under the same licence, and links to its article.

What is not here, on purpose

This site does not use Basketball-Reference, KenPom, recruiting services or any third-party team or player rating. Any rating shown is computed here from the box scores, by a documented method. Women's basketball is not covered: it deserves its own site rather than a corner of this one.

Logos and photographs

The public site shows generated team badges and silhouettes, not league or school logos or player photographs. Team names and marks belong to their clubs, schools and leagues. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Basketball Association or the NCAA.
